…are local master plans, zoning amendments and codes worth the paper they’re printed on?
The title quote comes from a Record Eagle editorial from January 28, Rodgers upholds Acme’s right to shape own future, about the most recent Acme Meijer ruling. Acme Township has been fighting the invasion of a Meijer superstore for about 2 years now on the grounds that it does not fit their vision of what they want their community to be.
Meijer has played hardball through litigation, repeatedly suing the Township and even the individual commissioners. Kinda dirty, although typical large, commercial developer behavior.
So, who gets to shape the future of Acme Township, the people or Meijer? No clear answers, but again a series of provocative questions about citizen rights and power ala Democracy School.
